Tracing Twelve Wallets to a Single Off Ramp
A client sent cryptocurrency over several months to someone they had met online, before realizing the relationship and the associated investment opportunity were fabricated.
The Situation
A client sent cryptocurrency over several months to someone they had met online, before realizing the relationship and the associated investment opportunity were fabricated.
The Challenge
Funds had been sent across a dozen separate transactions to different addresses, with no obvious connection between them at first glance.
The Investigation
We mapped every transaction the client had made and traced each one forward, testing for common destinations rather than assuming a single path.
Findings
All twelve transactions converged, through varying numbers of intermediate hops, at addresses controlled by the same exchange account.
Outcome
A single consolidated trace, rather than twelve separate ones, was delivered along with a prepared legal request package for the identified exchange.
Lessons
Scams involving many small transactions often still converge on a small number of endpoints. Consolidating all activity into one case is usually more effective.
Twelve Client Transfers
Individual transfers made over several months.
